Discover Primary Science
Over the past number of years Spa N.S. under the leadership of Geraldine Behan has taken part in the 'Discover Priamry Science Progamme'.
There are four main parts to the scheme.
- Schools are asked to encourage as many classes as possible to complete many different science experiments as part of their year's work.
- Schools need to invite speakers on science based topics to the school during year. Spa N.S. have had many speakers in over the past few years including local ornithologist Frank King, environmantal officer Michéal O Coileáin and Marine Biologist Sarah Varian.
- Schools need to host or visit science exhibitons which lead to a greater understanding of science topics. Spa N.S. has held many 'display days' where parents etc can come in and see different experiments which the children have done that year.
- Promote science in the local community by participating and organising local events. Spa N.S. organised and completed a most impressive campaign to earn the Green Flag in 2009. The school held a recycling day and a Beach Clean up as part of their efforts. Many of our classes have also visited Gortbrack Organic Farm, Killarney National Park and The Cambridge Mathematics Roadshow as part of the Annual Science Week
