Listowel Writers Week Success
Congratulations to Seán Michael Redican (3rd), Eoin Walsh 6th and Katie Dwyer (6th) who were winners in the Dan Keane Poetry Competition as part of the 2016 Listowel Writers Week. Katie's poem 'Forced to Flee' was also voted Best overall poem as part of the competition. Here they are being presented with their prizes by well known poet, Gabriel Fitzmaurice and Donal Nolan of the Kerryman Newpapers.
JEP Showcase Day May 12th 2016 - The Malton Killarney

Success in Tralee Credit Union Schools Quiz
Our Under 13 and Under 11 teams both finished 3rd in the Credit Union Quiz Competitions in Tralee. They performed brilliantly on the day being narrowly pipped in the tie breaker round. Many thanks to Master Tom Crowley for all of his hard work in preparing the teams. A real achievement to have teams in both categories finish in top three!

Spa N.S. scoops Monsignor Hugh O Flaherty Schools Literary Award

SPA National School pupils were in Killarney for the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Weekend where they collected a prize on behalf of the school for their efforts in an art and literary competition. The weekend is all about commemorating the Killarney native, Msgr Hugh O’Flaherty, who was became a hero when he helped over 6,500 Jews, US and British soldiers escape the clutches of the Nazis while he was based in the Vatican during WW2.
The organisers of the weekend ran a competition for primary and secondary schools and the Art and Literary Primary School Collective Award was won by Spa NS, with twins Conor and Marc Brick from Spa NS collecting the prize on the school’s behalf at Killarney library on Friday.
In the adjudicator’s report it noted: “The pupils of Spa National School displayed a great variety of writing skills – some are consummate storytellers and you want to hear them as well as read their essays. It’s as if they’re delivering to an audience. We wish to congratulate the teacher of their class Mrs. Griffin Crowe on the quality and style of the writing contained in the collective entries of the pupils in this school.

Easter holidays are fast approaching and school is bustling as we prepare for our two week break. Ms Kelly took her students to the staff room to prepare Chocolate Easter nests. The results were delicious!!
Seachtain na Gaeilge
Spa N.S are celebrating seachtain na Gaeilge from Monday 9th March to Friday 13th March. Tá gach duine ag baint taitneamh as imeachtaí“Seachtain na Gaeilge 2015”. Tá gach éinne ag déanamh iarracht Gaeilge a labhairt.Mrs Behan, our Gaeilge co - ordinator has arranged a wide variety of fun activities for the whole school to enjoy. 4th Class sang a series of Irish rannta at the Meadowlands hotel with various other Kerry schools to kickstart the festivities.(see images below)
Tráth na gCeist
On February, 17th we celebrated Pancake Tuesday at Spa National School. Many classes and their teachers cooked up a storm by hosting pancake parties around the school. Click on the link below to view a video of 4th class making their pancóga with their teachers Mrs Behan & Ms Kelly.
On Friday January 30th, Third and fourth class, with their teachers, Ms Breen and Mrs Behan hosted Grandparents Day in the halla. The children arranged singing, dancing, hymns and music. They really enjoyed hearing about days long ago. A special thanks to our teachers and visitors who made the day such a success. We are already looking forward to next years.

Sixth Class Debating Team
The Sixth class debating team were triumphant yet again on Mon 26th January at Tralee Education Centre. All of their hard work has paid off and they are now through to the county final against Ardfert N.S. Congratulations to the entire team and their teacher Mrs Griffin Crowe.

Winners at the National Fís Film Festival in Dublin
Two of last year's 6th class students pictured at the 2014 National Fís Film Festival Awards held in the Helix in Dublin last week where Spa N.S.'s entry 'Spa's Secret Story' won an award in the History category. The students travelled to Dublin with their teacher Miss Kelly and Miss Ahern to accept the award on behalf of their class. Well done all!

National 'Straighten Up' Week!
As part of 'National Straighten Up' Week, Kate Slade from Vitality Chiropractors visited the school and explained to the classes the importance of good posture and demonstrated the best way to carry school bags.

Spa N.S.'s Ice Bucket Challenge!
Oh that was cold! Well done to all the teachers and parents who participated in Spa N.S.'s very own 'Ice Bucket Challenge' and raised €478 for the Irish Motor Neurone Society!
